Comparison of laptops and desktops

One of the first questions you need to answer when choosing a computer for graphic design is whether to choose a laptop or a desktop. Depending on what you do, how much you do, and where you do it, the answer varies.

Achieving performance

The use of your computer makes a difference when you choose between a laptop and a desktop. During operation, all computer components become hot, and dissipating heat in notebook computers is much more difficult. As a result, laptop components do not run as fast as desktop components in order to reduce the amount of heat generated on the laptop. For instance, laptop CPUs (processors) usually have half to 60 percent of the performance of desktop CPUs. As desktop Computadora de escritorio have more slots than laptops, they can be upgraded with more RAM since they have more RAM slots available. The laptop GPU (graphics card) is 70% to 80% faster than the desktop GPU (graphics card) if you have a dedicated GPU. In general, desktop GPUs are also of higher quality compared to mobile GPUs.

Next, you should ask yourself if you always want desktop-level performance from your graphic design computer. You will notice that CPU and GPU speeds slow down when playing or editing videos or processing photos.   There are also memory (RAM) slots on desktop computers. Most of the time, these slots are not full, but you can add more memory if necessary. You can also upgrade the memory in a laptop, but laptops generally do not have as many slots available as desktops. To use common graphic design software, find out how much RAM you really need.

Sturdiness

The components of desktops and laptops are similar in terms of robustness. It is easy to switch out parts on a desktop if one fails or is no longer suitable. There are more configuration options available with desktop computers, so you don’t have to customize the parts yourself.

Monitors may suffer from durability issues. With desktop computers, you can select the size of your monitor and switch it to another. You can attach an external monitor if you aren’t traveling if the monitor size is limited by the size of the laptop. In general, laptops have solid state drives (SSDs), which are more durable when dropped or knocked over, but they also offer other benefits. It is possible to configure desktops for any type of storage and to upgrade them later. Find out about the benefits of SSDs.

Located

One of the most important differences between desktops and laptops is their portability. If you travel or visit clients and need to take work with you, you will only be able to do so with a laptop. In many cases, you can have the best of both worlds by having a desktop and a laptop.

There are also other options

In case your budget does not permit it, there are other options.

If you need the portability and storage capacity of a laptop, but more storage space than it offers, you can connect an external storage drive to your laptop to hold your frequently accessed files.
